Episode Summary

Every Great Lent, iEcclesia features weekly podcasts, covering a variety of topics related to this very important period of the Church year. These programs are designed to help the listener understand why we celebrate Great Lent, the weekly themes, and concluding with the importance of Holy Week and Pascha.

When we hear the words monasticism, monastery, monks and nuns, many people tend to think of the “Hollywood” monks and nuns of the Western confessions or the older monks and nuns, complete with black cassocks and prayer ropes. As we enter a monastery, or see them at our parishes (from time to time), it’s as if we are encountering another world. This podcast is here to address the questions about this centuries-old institution, from “how to become a monastic” to “is it old fashioned?”

Our second podcast, on this 2nd Friday of Great Lent, is Monasticism: From the Desert to North America.

The program begins with a definition of monasticism and about the origins of monasticism and who the pioneers were. Next, a

description of the different types of monasticism throughout the world is discussed. Also discussed is the process of becoming a monk or

nun; what the process involves, whether it's a life-time commitment or can one leave the monastery after a certain period of time. The

program continues with a word on what authority does an “Abbot” or “Abbess” play in the life of a monastery. Some people would say

that monasticism is “irrelevant” and “old fashioned” and the role of Monasticism in today’s society is explained. Also, how can

Monasticism have a place in a layperson’s life as well as what misconceptions people have about monasteries and monastics in general.

Also discussed is what should people expect to find or experience when they visit a monastery; both good and bad. Concluding the

program are some final thoughts from our guest.
